Be well. Stay healthy. Take care. In recent weeks it seems we end every phone call, Zoom chat and email with the same words. As we worry for the health and wellbeing of our family, friends, co-workers and clients, wellness is top of mind like never before. When we enter and leave we are acutely aware of where we have been, and what we are bringing into our homes. As we think about the future of design, how will wellness factor into the choices we make?

We can no longer take for granted the quality of the air we breathe, and the impact –positive or negative – of the materials we introduce into the spaces where we live, work, and play. What wellness standards should you be setting for your design practice? How can you help your clients make good choices that will bring environmental benefits into their home?
From textiles to furnishings to paints, the integrity of the materials you source can positively impact the home environment. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Like the food we put on our table, the more you know about the makers, and values they bring to their products, the better-educated choices you’ll make.
We have talked about the health benefits of natural rugs, and the importance of knowing the provenance of the materials used, including the dyes used to color the yarns and the integrity of the rug backing and adhesives used in assembling. For example, Merida rugs use only acid dyes for our wool, alpaca and mohair yarns, which do not emit harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
Merida has been passionate about all things natural since long before wellness or sustainability were sought after values. For 40 years we have been sourcing the healthiest and highest quality materials, as well as practicing and honing our design and manufacturing process to create beautiful rugs that will stand the test of time. What that means to you and your clients is the confidence of knowing we obsess over every ingredient that goes into our finished products to ensure they are beautiful, durable and healthy.
